The Town of Huron highway department is responsible for the care and maintenance of approximately 49.84 miles of centerline roads that are owned by the town. In the winter we salt, sand and plow 80.55 miles of Town and County roads. We don’t maintain State Roads. Please be careful when you see our plows coming, slow down and move as far to the right as possible so we can plow the center of the road. When we are not on the roads we are busy maintaining our equipment and preparing for the next time we need to go out to clear the roads.
In the Spring, summer and fall we are busy repairing roads and bridges. This includes culvert replacement, ditch cleaning, storm drainage projects, road resurfacing, and other milling and paving work. We are responsible for mowing along the Town roads and cleaning up brush as needed. Remember to slow down and move over when you are passing through a work zone to protect our employees.
The department does assist other departments in town when they are in need of equipment or additional personnel. We also provide in-kind services for other Towns, the County, and State if needed.
We are working on the addition to our highway barn. This will allow us to store more of our equipment indoors and out of the weather. The addition was paid partially by a Federal- government grant (ARPA funds). We plan to have an open house when the addition is completed.
